CHAPTER 14

This place had me going crazy. It was almost just as bad as the County Jail. I mean, wall to wall bitches, no privacy, muthafuckas scared to hop their funky asses in the shower, feet smelling like stale corn chips, and a whole lot more unkosher shit I definitely wasn’t feeling. The only difference from jail was there weren’t any bars or walls to keep you inside.

Every trick in this shelter had a story and had fallen on some kind of hard times. From homeless situations and drug addictions to fleeing super abusive niggas, these women and their children had gone through it. Their scarred and bruised faces showed it.

This was not my scene at all. These bitches were charity cases. I was a hustla; born that way. We were totally different and had nothing in common. That was why on my second day in this place, I had to get out and at least get some damn air. I couldn’t take another second of being cooped up in here. Besides, I still needed to find out exactly what was happening on the home front. I was still in the dark on what had been going on with my business while I was sitting in The County.

“Keema, I don’t know your entire story because you won’t let me all the way in,” Mrs. Kyle said as we headed from her tiny office, and down the narrow hallway of the women’s shelter. She was one of the shelter’s caseworkers.

I hadn’t told her why exactly I’d come in the other night. The only information I was willing to volunteer was that I was out on the street and needed someplace to stay. That’s it and that’s all.

“But I do assure you,” she continued, “that we have a whole lot of programs and resources here to benefit you.”

It was taking everything in my power to keep from rolling my eyes. The bitch had just had me in her office for the past half hour trying to get up in my personal business, asking me question after question. She had had me filling out paper work and wanted me to stick around for a house meeting that all the women had to attend every evening. To hell with that. I played it off like I really had some place I needed to be and would be back later that evening as soon as I could. The last thing I wanted to do was sit around and listen to a bunch of bitches whine about their damn problems.

“Keema, you’re a very bright and beautiful young woman. I’ve seen a lot of them like you come through that door but they leave without taking advantage of what we have to offer. I’m truly hoping you won’t be one of those women. I’m hoping you’ll really be back this evening. Something in those streets brought you in here in the first place. I hope it won’t pull you all the way under this time. “

“I’ll be back this evening,” I told her quickly, growing annoyed at the sound of her voice.
